If you’d like to know more about this unusual old store, drop us a line.
AT THE LYNCHBURG HARDWARE & GENERAL STORE, you’ll find everything from darning thread to duck decoys.
And, just a short walk away, you’ll find Jack Daniel’s Distillery, where we still make whiskey the same way we did 114 years ago: gentling every drop with a process called charcoal mellowing. If you live in a big city, you won’t find a store much like Lynchburg’s. No matter where you live, you won’t find a distillery much like Jack Daniel’s.

JACK DANIEL AND HIS NEPHEW, Lem Motlow, disagreed on most everything. Until it came to making whiskey.
Mr. Jack (that’s him on the left) was a fancy dresser. So Lem refused to wear a tie! But they both insisted on mellowing their whiskey through huge vats of charcoal before aging. And we’re about the only distillery who still does it that way today. You see Mr. Jack once said, “Every day we make it, we’ll make it the best we can.” And neither Lem nor anybody else disagreed with that.

MS. TOODLER BRANCH is the one and only landmark in Lynchburg, Tennessee, that the government doesn’t know about.
Our courthouse on the town square dates back to 1885. Our jail pre-dates that. And our distillery, where smooth-sippin’ whiskey has been made since Jack Daniel settled here in 1866, is registered as America’s oldest. Recently, the United States Government named all these places National Historic Sites. And if they ever saw Toodler, we bet they’d name him one too.

MS. CLAYTON TOSH has more good tales about Jack Daniel than most folks can ever believe.
He’ll tell you that Mr. Jack promised marriage to two girls at once in 1875; that nobody ever saw him with-out a coat and tie; and that he perfected a way of manufacturing his whiskey (called charcoal mellowing) that made it uncommonly smooth. Of course, there’s no one living who can vouch for the first two tales. But after a sip of Jack Daniel’s, most everyone goes along with the third.
Merry Christmas from all of us at Jack Daniel’s
