Why there’s a little of Loch Lomond in every bottle of Ballantine’s

Loch Lomond, Scotland’s celebrated lake of ballad and verse, imparts something very special to Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky. It lends some of its serenity and sunny-lightness to the spirit. Realistically, Loch Lomond’s azure waters are perfect for making Scotch. For good Scotch requires a water of uncommon gentleness. And the Loch’s water is measured at only 3 to 5 degrees of hardness (London’s water measures up to 300 degrees). Another important consideration: Ballantine’s contains a delicate harmony of 42 Scotch Whiskies, each contributing its particular flavor to this Scotch’s pleasing personality.

The final result is Scotch never brash or heavy — nor so limply light that it merely teases the taste buds.

The final result is Scotch Whisky as Scotch Whisky should be. Good-natured, full of proud heritage, flaunting its authentic flavor and quality to all those who enjoy its company. Just a few reasons why: the more you know about Scotch the more you like Ballantine’s.

What does Scotland’s moody climate have to do with Ballantine’s sunny-light flavor?

Scotland’s climate is an odd combination of weather conditions. There are periods of fine rain and hanging mists. Overnight it clears and a dazzling sun bathes the land. Somehow, this climate has a beneficial effect on Ballantine’s sunny-light flavor.

At Dumbarton, oaken barrels of Ballantine’s lie racked in the aging sheds. Heavy mists from the nearby River Clyde mingle with rolling zephyrs from the Highlands, wrapping each barrel in a gentle blanket. Slowly the whisky “breathes”‘ through the barrel, taking something, giving something.

The end result is Ballantine’s characteristic sunny-light flavor … never heavy or brash, nor so limply light that it merely teases your taste buds. Just a few reasons why: the more you know about Scotch the more you like Ballantine’s.

A squad of geese guards Ballantine’s

At Dumbarton, Scotland, thousands of oaken barrels of Scotch Whisky destined to become Ballantine’s lie racked in the aging sheds. They are guarded by a proud squad of 18 white Chinese geese, led by a crusty old gander irreverently called Mr. Ballantine. Any uninvited visitor must first deal with these stern sentinels. For one shrill cackle starts another and soon a tuneless symphony brings the authorities.

Here the 42 fine Scotch Whiskies that go into Ballantine’s are brought to maturity. Rolling mists from the nearby Clyde gently wrap each barrel in a silken blanket. As the whisky in each barrel “breathes” this moist Scottish atmosphere, it slowly loses any sharpness, emerging with its characteristic sunny-light flavor.

Once harmonized into Ballantine’s, the result is Scotch Whisky unsurpassed in authentic taste — never heavy or brash … nor so limply light that it merely teases the taste buds. Just a few reasons why: The more you know about Scotch the more you like Ballantine’s.

Give Ballantine’s Scotch — the bright, right spirit of Loch Lomond

A particularly tasteful way of expressing your esteem and sincerity at Christmas is by giving Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky. For here is a Scotch of unquestionably fine reputation. The only Scotch using the uncommonly soft waters of Loch Lomond in its making process. Just one of the reasons that Ballantine’s is always sunny-light of flavor. Never heavy or brash — nor so limply light that it merely teases the taste buds. This year, give Ballantine’s Scotch with the assurance that your friends will agree: The more you know about Scotch the more you like Ballantine’s.

Give Ballantine’s proudly in this handsome Holiday Wrap, emblazoned with an embossed seal and red sash on pure white. Bottled in Scotland • Blended Scotch Whisky • 86 Proof • Imported by “21” Brands. Inc. N. Y. C.

About The Blog

The latter group are often referred to as “mixologists,” a term given to practitioners of “mixology,” which is really just another way of referring to the practice of making good cocktails. Mixology might seem like a newfangled term, but it’s actually pretty old, like mid-19th century old, and was only revived as a way to describe the recent renaissance of bartenders caring (a lot) about their craft.
