Alaska and Cocktails
Holidays and Observances

Alaska was purchased from Russia on March 30, 1867. The purchase was made by the United States Secretary of State, William Seward, for a total of $7.2 million dollars. At the time, many Americans criticized the purchase, calling it “Seward’s Folly” or “Seward’s Icebox” because they did not see the value in acquiring such a vast and remote territory. However, the acquisition of Alaska proved to be a wise decision in the long run, as it brought vast natural resources and strategic advantages to the United States.

  1. The Alaska Cocktail: This classic cocktail was created in the early 1900s and features gin, yellow Chartreuse, and orange bitters. The green color of the Chartreuse can represent the forests of Alaska, while the bright orange bitters can evoke the state’s stunning sunsets.
  2. The Glacier Martini: This elegant cocktail features vodka, blue curacao, and white cranberry juice. The blue color of the curacao can represent the icy glaciers of Alaska, while the white cranberry juice adds a touch of sweetness and balances out the flavors.
  3. The Midnight Sun: This refreshing cocktail features vodka, grapefruit juice, and raspberry syrup. The bright red color of the raspberry syrup can evoke the stunning colors of the midnight sun, which is visible in Alaska during the summer months.
  4. The Aurora Borealis: This unique cocktail features gin, blue curacao, and tonic water. The blue curacao can represent the aurora borealis, which is visible in Alaska during the winter months, while the tonic water adds a touch of effervescence and bitterness.
  5. The Denali Sour: This whiskey-based cocktail features lemon juice, honey syrup, and a splash of red wine. The red wine can represent the stunning colors of Denali, the highest peak in North America, which is located in Alaska.

About The Blog

The latter group are often referred to as “mixologists,” a term given to practitioners of “mixology,” which is really just another way of referring to the practice of making good cocktails. Mixology might seem like a newfangled term, but it’s actually pretty old, like mid-19th century old, and was only revived as a way to describe the recent renaissance of bartenders caring (a lot) about their craft.
