Lemonade or Limeade: Pastis can be mixed with lemonade or limeade to create a tangy and refreshing drink.

Tomato Juice: When mixed with tomato juice and a few dashes of Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce, Pastis becomes a savory cocktail called the Tomate.

Ginger Ale or Tonic Water: Mixing Pastis with ginger ale or tonic water can create a fizzy and refreshing drink.

Orgeat Syrup: Pastis can be mixed with orgeat syrup, which is a sweet almond-flavored syrup, to create a cocktail called Mauresque.

Bitters: Pastis can be mixed with bitters, such as Angostura bitters, to create a more complex and sophisticated cocktail.

Fast Facts About Pastis

What is Pastis?

Pastis is an anise-flavored liqueur that originated in France. It is made by steeping a blend of herbs and spices, including anise, licorice, and fennel, in alcohol. The resulting liquid is then distilled and blended with sugar and water to create the final product. Pastis is typically enjoyed as an aperitif, mixed with cold water to create a refreshing and flavorful drink.

What is the Proof of Pastis?

The proof of Pastis can vary depending on the brand and the country of origin. In France, the minimum proof for Pastis is 40% alcohol by volume (ABV), while in other countries it may be slightly higher or lower.

What are the Different Types of Pastis?

There are several different brands of Pastis, each with its own unique flavor profile. Some popular brands include Ricard, Pernod, and Henri Bardouin. Some brands may be sweeter or more anise-forward than others, and may contain different botanicals or spices.

What is the Difference Between Pastis and Other Types of Distilled Spirits?

Pastis is similar to other anise-flavored spirits such as absinthe, ouzo, and sambuca, but there are some key differences. Pastis is typically lower in alcohol content than absinthe and is not typically consumed by itself as a shot. Pastis is also not typically served with a sugar cube and water, which is a common method for consuming absinthe.

What is the Best Brand of Pastis?

The “best” brand of Pastis is largely a matter of personal preference. Some popular brands include Ricard, Pernod, and Henri Bardouin. It is recommended to try several brands to find the one that suits your tastes the best.

About The Blog

The latter group are often referred to as “mixologists,” a term given to practitioners of “mixology,” which is really just another way of referring to the practice of making good cocktails. Mixology might seem like a newfangled term, but it’s actually pretty old, like mid-19th century old, and was only revived as a way to describe the recent renaissance of bartenders caring (a lot) about their craft.
