5 Classic Bourbons

5 Classic Bourbons
Brands

Bourbon is a type of American whiskey that is made from at least 51% corn and aged in new, charred oak barrels. It is produced primarily in the southern United States, particularly in Kentucky. There are many classic bourbons, each with its own unique flavor profile, but here are a few of the most well-known:

  1. Jim Beam – Jim Beam is one of the most popular and widely available bourbons in the world. It has been produced since the late 1700s and is known for its smooth, mellow flavor. Jim Beam is made from a mash bill that is 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley.
  2. Wild Turkey – Wild Turkey is another classic bourbon that has been produced since the mid-1900s. It is known for its bold, spicy flavor and high alcohol content (typically around 101 proof). Wild Turkey is made from a mash bill that is 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley.
  3. Buffalo Trace – Buffalo Trace is a newer bourbon (introduced in 1999) but has quickly become a favorite among bourbon enthusiasts. It is known for its smooth, sweet flavor and has won numerous awards for its quality. Buffalo Trace is made from a mash bill that is 10% rye, 10% barley, and 80% corn.
  4. Maker’s Mark – Maker’s Mark, as mentioned in the previous answer, is a classic bourbon known for its smooth, sweet flavor and distinctive red wax seal. Maker’s Mark is made from a mash bill that is 70% corn, 16% wheat, and 14% malted barley.
  5. Woodford Reserve – Woodford Reserve is a premium bourbon that is known for its complex, layered flavor. It is made from a mash bill that is 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley and is aged for a minimum of six years. Woodford Reserve is also unique in that it is distilled in copper pot stills, which gives it a distinct flavor profile.

These are just a few examples of the many classic bourbons that are available. Each one has its own unique flavor profile, so it’s worth trying a few different options to see which one you prefer.

About The Blog

The latter group are often referred to as “mixologists,” a term given to practitioners of “mixology,” which is really just another way of referring to the practice of making good cocktails. Mixology might seem like a newfangled term, but it’s actually pretty old, like mid-19th century old, and was only revived as a way to describe the recent renaissance of bartenders caring (a lot) about their craft.
